A forerunner in inkjet printing: the HP Inkjet Cartridge

The HP inkjet cartridge line stems from the same technology that makes HP printers the forerunner in world wide printing.

Hewlett Packard (HP) was founded by two Stanford University classmates in a Palo Alto garage. The year was 1939, and Bill Hewlett along with David Packard created their first invention: an audio oscillator. These devices became a milestone in audio oscillation equipment because of the simplicity of the circuitry and the low cost efficiency of the unit. With their first product under their belt, Hewlett and Packard began venturing into other aspects of electronic equipment and soon became one of the world's leaders in PC, printer, imaging, and IT technology.

The HP ThInkjet Printers, introduced in 1984, were the first mass marketed personal inkjet printers in the world. They used thermal inkjet printing technology developed in their labs and offered a quiet alternative to the noisy dot-matrix printers of the time. The HP inkjet cartridge that went into these printers offered a resolution of 96dpi and was able to print at 150 characters per second. Since that time, HP inkjet cartridges have come a long way, now offering up to 4800dpi resolution and printing at speeds of up to 21 pages per minute in black and white. By combining the print head with the cartridge, the HP inkjet cartridge offered a no-mess, no-hassle solution to personal printing.
