Canon inkjet cartridges utilize the heat, or "bubble" method of inkjet printing. The ink is heated until a bubble is formed and pushes out a droplet of ink. These droplets are smaller than the thickness of human hair and combine to give us dazzling images and crisp text.

Current technological advances have allowed for Canon inkjet cartridges to implement a new variation of the "bubble" printing method. Conventional Bubble Jet printers used heaters to create a bubble inside the nozzle. This caused pressure from inside the nozzle and created a droplet of ink that was released onto the paper. However, due to minute differences in nozzle position and timing, the amount of ink discharged from the cartridges varied. With the new "MicroFine Droplet Technology", the amount of discharged ink is better controlled and not affected by timing, position, or even temperature fluctuations. The bubbles are created closer to the nozzle outlet and the amount of ink between the heater and the outlet is controlled by limiting the space between the two. With this new technology, Canon inkjet cartridges offer better picture quality coupled with faster printing speeds.

Thanks to the new MicroFine Droplet Technology, the number of nozzles on the printer head of Canon inkjet cartridges have increased, allowing a greater resolution and more vivid colors. The cartridges on a i950 model printer contain 512 nozzles for each of six colors, combining for a total of 3,072 nozzles on the printer head and a resolution of up to 4800 dpi.
